YUNGBLUD Gets Real On Northern England, FISH & CHIPS, Vans Warped Tour
New Houston Music Outlet speaks with English pop, alt-rock sensation, YUNGBLUD. The “I Love You, Will You Marry Me” singer gets candid on Northern England, Vans Warped Tour, and on who can make the best fish and chips! All this plus much more in this new 7-minute chat with Dominic Harrison a.k.a YUNGBLUD.
About the video:
Hailing from Doncaster, YUNGBLUD is a highly energetic and charming artist whose music can be best described as genre defiant and socially conscious. He takes a bold, and fresh approach to music, drawing on pop, alternative rock, punk, and hip hop to create songs that feel like youthful anthems, but typically with a message. Songs like “Medication” or “King Charles” prove this point beautifully.
In our talk with Dominic, he recalls the musical imprint of the Northern region of England that he calls home, naming bands like The Artic Monkeys and Oasis. He credits “dark and gritty” rock & roll to the region jokingly in-part to bands being “miserable”. He breaks down for us some of the differences between Northern and Southern England, namely how they prepare fish and chips, a popular English dish. All jokes aside, YUNGBLUD has always been quick on his feet.
It was this very energy as a child, Dominic recalls, that got him into trouble. He explains, “People misunderstood my energy. I was very opiniated. I think people especially in power do not like to be confronted by someone younger than them.” He explains in the interview how he got linked up with VWT founder, Kevin Lyman.
YUNGBLUD hit the road as Vans Warped Tour hit the road for the final time this year (2018). He’s got a busy year ahead of himself; doing shows on Vans and then completing a support tour for his debut album, “21st Century Liability”. During his Houston show, he visited with every, single one of his fans. We asked him why this was important to him, this was his answer: “Warped Tour is amazing because you’ve got a connection with the fans. You’ve got a connection with the people” he explains, “The things that I’m writing are about real issues. I want to be an outlet for people who feel they can’t be themselves and can’t say what they think. So to meet them and to talk to them is the best thing in the world because all my life I’ve felt like I’ve been shouting into a dark abyss. But now I feel like I’m having a conversation with the people and that’s really important to me.”
When asked what he wants audiences to take home from his music he stated, ” That you can fundamentally be yourself. No matter what. Be yourself. Say what you think because if you say what you think, that’s when you are heard and that’s when you can change things.”
