Spring Native Wyatt Martin Finds A Moment of Clarity On New EP
Mood, depression, ADHD, how does one make sense of it all? Luckily for us, Spring, Houston native Wyatt Martin comes right on time with a pivotal project. That’s right, Martin’s “The Things I Release” comes screaming at viewers from such a place of peace and realization; between each sweet murmured vocal inflection lies a great deal of tenderness, creativity, and most of all, freedom.
Singer and songwriter Wyatt Martin is a 19 year-old in the city and a rising talent. With this new EP he introduces an interesting concept. He tells The Outlet, “The EP is a musical challenge that myself and my ADHD brain explored: to write an entire EP completely off my amphetamine prescription. Any person with ADHD would understand the stark contrast in mood, motivation, and creativity when off their medicine; I wanted to explore this mood musically.”
“The Things I Release” consists of four acoustic singer-songwriter tracks. Each ballad consists of breathy vocals, intimate guitar accompaniment, and an endearing, overall dreamy quality as if to mimic the mood “highs” and “lows” associated with medicating for the disorder. “The [EP] title is a play on words highlighting the enormous release of dopamine in the brain when ADHD meds are taken,” Martin explains, “When I’m not taking my pills, I feel like myself. Thus, “The Things I Release” is…a statement that I can create and be myself without a chemical.”
As if further explanation is needed, the artist himself seems to poignantly get that point across in what feels to be the “climax” of the EP. “I’ve Been Set Free But My Soul’s A Captive” is a moment of jubilation. All together, the entire EP is a must listen from beginning to end. Be on the look out for more from Wyatt Martin. He has plans to release a different EP titled, “The Things It Released“. That project will contrast the current one. He tells The Outlet that the EP will be composed of songs produced while on his ADHD medicine. It will be quite a treat to hear what is to come.
